- Why is it
necessary to edit your work?
- Among the things that people hate most is having to edit their work.
Yet it is important to learn through looking at your own mistakes and
see if there are typical errors which you can avoid making in the future.
- Task: look through your previous essays and find two or more
errors you have made consistently. Why is this type of an error a problem
for you? What could you do to improve?
- What
is the advantage of having someone else look at your work?
- Another person may not be a better writer than you, but he or she
might see something to improve in your work. We often unconsciously
skip over some errors that might look right to us, but which do not
look right to others.
- Task: Think of five things you or another person might look
for when editing your work.
- How
can I proof-read other than just reading it through?
- Check your work slowly and carefully for spelling, punctuation, grammar
and vocabulary. Try proof-reading your essay twice, the usual way and
then reading it from the end to the beginning -- that way you can sometimes
pick up things that might be missed reading it in the regular way from
the beginning to the end.
- Task: What do you think is the advantage of reading your paper
from the end to the beginning?
