Information Searching Skills

There are many different sources of information for a university project. It can be hard to decide what is acceptable, especially now with so much information on the internet.

A good rule to remember is that good sources are usually those that have been through an editorial process, such as books, textbooks or journal articles. Bad sources tend to be those that haven’t.

Good Academic Sources of information

Bad Academic Sources of Information

  • Journal articles
  • Published books
  • University textbooks
  • Lecture notes

One great feature of the internet, though, is the ability to search through the HKU Library database from home. This makes gathering information very conventient. Here is a step-by-step guide for how to search through a journal and search through a database for your Poster Presentation.

Searching through a specific journal

  1. Go to http://lib.hku.hk/
  2. Click on “Dragon” and click on “Title”
  3. Type in “Journal of Medical Engineering & Technology” or “Medical Engineering and Physics”.
  4. Click on the online journal.
  5. Choose a search engine. I like Academic Search Premier the best.
  6. Go to advanced search.
  7. Put in some key words from your MEP topic.

If you aren’t sure of the names of journals, you might just click on “Subject” rather than “Title” in step 2 and put in key words such as “Medical Engineering”.

Searching through a database

  1. Go to http://lib.hku.hk/
  2. Click on “Databases”.
  3. Go into “Medical Sciences”.
  4. Click on “Key Medical Databases”.
  5. Choose the database you want. A good one to use is “PubMed”.
  6. Click “Click to start searching”.
  7. Put key words into the search box.

You can repeat this process with engineering databases too. IEE is a good one in the Electrical Engineering databases.

For more advice about searching for information specifically related to Medical Engineering, go to the HKU library's Subject Guide for Medical Engineering or contact Amy Wong, the Librarian in charge of Medical Engineering.
