4. Reference Lists / Bibliographies

Whether you are using footnotes, endnotes or brief references in the text you must supply full information about the sources of information you are referring to. The information supplied about each publication must contain the following elements:

  • the name of the author(s)
  • the date of publication
  • the title of the work
  • the publisher

Other information may also be necessary:
For a journal also add the name, issue number and the page numbers of the journal. For an edited collection also add the title of the collection and the name of the editor. For electronic sources add the web address and when you viewed it. These types of sources are all covered in the examples below.

Remember, there are various formats for reference lists but the main information is always the same. These examples all use the same format:
