English for Law Homepage

This website is designed to offer 1st-year students of law the opportunity to develop and test their vocabulary and close reading skills in a legal context. All the sample texts and sentences are edited from authentic case, reports in the area of negligence and the selected words are either high frequency items or terms that cause problems to Cantonese-speaking students.

The 12 texts (see screen capture below) are drawn from prominent negligence cases and can be visited through the Tools for analysing legal texts. For each of these texts, we suggest you

  • read through the text,
  • click on the target words for pronunciation, meaning and examples, & then
  • click on the Exercises to test your understanding of these terms.

Finally, for amusement, when you feel comfortable with the terms, try the Games

The Glossary offers you an index of all 150+ terms targeted in this learning resource

The "Tools for analysing legal texts" allow you to see how any expression –not just those targeted in this resource - are used most commonly in case reports, ordinances and students’problem answers.
